Riding in Jackson Hole means sharing the trail with some of North America's most iconic wildlife. Knowing how to behave keeps you — and the animals — safe.
Moose Are No Joke
Moose are the most common and most dangerous trail encounter in Jackson Hole. They're territorial and unpredictable, especially cows with calves. Give them a wide berth — at least 50 yards — and never get between a cow and her calf. If a moose charges, run. Unlike bears, you should flee from a moose.
Bear Country
Both black and grizzly bears live in the region. Make noise on trails to avoid surprising them, ride in groups when possible, and carry bear spray on your body (not in your pack). Know how to use it.
Yield Rules
Standard mountain bike etiquette applies: downhill riders yield to uphill riders, and all cyclists yield to hikers and horses. Slow down and call out when passing. On multi-use pathways, keep right and pass on the left with a clear call-out.
